Your beautiful jewelry and accessories can lose their shine and luster, because of the oils in the skin, and improper storing. Here are some tips for cleaning your jewelry and keeping them looking their best. After all its your investment and you would want to keep it in the best possible shape.
- Some Gold Jewellery particularly old ones and stone studded with closed back, develop red or black stains. This can be removed by repolishing. This may happen when the jewellery is kept in lockers for long periods. To prevent this, wrap the jewellery in tissue papers and plastic bags, when you leave them in your lockers.
- Silver articles tarnish (black) soon, more so in coastal areas. You need to clean them quite often.
- Organic Gems like Coral and Pearl are easily affected by moisture, strong perfumes with alcohol and sweat.
- Wrap them in tissue paper.
- Clean them with soft tissue papers or cotton cloth, particularly after use.
- Gemstones like Emerald, Aquamarine, Fluorite and Apatite are very soft, take extra care while storing them and while handling or wearing them.
- Don't put your jewellery in small boxes or pouches for storing. This may damage both the stones and the jewellery. Keep them properly in separate boxes or pouches.
- You can clean your open set jewellery with water, liquids, preferably in ultrasonic cleaners, except Emerald or dyed stones studded jewellery.
- Stone studded jewellery with foiled and closed back should not be cleaned with water or liquids or in ultrasonic cleaners.
- Use jewellery cleaning cloths or clean lint free cotton cloth to wipe to clean your jewellery.
- Once in a while check the mountings of Diamonds and other gems in your rings and other studded jewellery with your jeweller.
- Take the advice of a jewellery expert for mending, repairing or resetting your jewellery.
